Prepare tools and sequence

Clean and sharpen tools, prepare wire and substrate, and decide which intervention has priority. If the tree needs root work, plan planting and aftercare before cutting. Keep alternatives until the structure is visible and the tree’s condition is confirmed.

Make reversible choices first

Use selective pruning and staged wire where possible. Avoid removing a branch that may be needed for recovery until the design is clear. Wire only flexible sections and inspect for damage. Major bends or deadwood work should be matched to the species and the practitioner’s skill.

Establish, then wait

Secure the tree in its container and water thoroughly. Protect it from extremes appropriate to its species. Delay further styling until new growth and root function indicate recovery. An attractive silhouette immediately after work does not prove that the tree has succeeded.

Review the result over time

Photograph the tree from the same front and compare growth across seasons. Adjust the plan based on vigor, budding and branch response. Good design remains responsive to the living material.
