The best timing for many temperate species is linked to the point before or around renewed growth, but local climates vary. A mild spell can be followed by frost. Keep newly worked trees protected while roots re-establish, especially if the container is shallow.

Prepare rather than rush

Clean tools, prepare substrate, check pots and drainage mesh, and review last year’s notes. Repot only trees that need it and are strong enough. Leave healthy trees in place if the substrate remains functional and the root system has room.

Do not force an early start

Heating a tree or placing it in a warm room can trigger growth before outdoor conditions are safe. Dormant trees need appropriate seasonal conditions. Protect roots from severe cold without eliminating the winter cycle.

Use species-specific advice

Evergreens, pines, deciduous trees and tropical plants differ in timing and response. A single February-to-April rule cannot cover them all. Consult local bonsai practitioners and monitor actual phenology.
