Read growth clues in context
Long weak shoots, wide spacing between leaves or needles and sparse interior foliage can indicate insufficient light, but they can also reflect species, pruning history or excess fertilizer. Compare with healthy growth on the same tree and check roots, pests and watering.
Increase exposure safely
Acclimate gradually to direct sun. A tree moved from a dim room to full midday sun can scorch. Outdoors, consider morning sun, filtered afternoon shade or shelter from hot reflected surfaces depending on species and climate.
Light changes water use
As exposure increases, substrate may dry faster and leaf temperature may rise. Check moisture more often during transition. Do not solve inadequate light by keeping roots constantly wet or by applying extra fertilizer.
Indoor limits remain
Supplemental lights can improve indoor conditions, but they do not provide dormancy or outdoor climate for temperate trees. Confirm the species’ seasonal needs and choose a suitable winter location.
