Know what is hardy
A tree’s tolerance in the ground does not equal its tolerance in a pot. Root hardiness, species, provenance, pot material and exposure all matter. Identify each tree and learn local minimum temperatures before choosing an unheated shelter or insulation method.
Choose a stable environment
A cold frame, sheltered outdoor bench or protected ground-level area can reduce wind and temperature swings while retaining dormancy. Avoid warm indoor rooms for temperate trees. Ensure ventilation and inspect for overheating on sunny winter days.
Water and wind
Check moisture during dry, windy periods, even when trees are dormant. Protect pots from falling or tipping. Do not let water remain trapped around roots during prolonged cold; drainage remains important in winter.
Tropical and subtropical bonsai differ
Move frost-sensitive species to a bright location above their safe temperature range. Provide enough light and avoid placing them beside heaters or cold drafts. “Indoor bonsai” still need active observation, airflow and appropriate humidity.
