Prepare before lifting

Cover drainage holes with mesh secured so it cannot shift. Install tie-down wires before the root ball is in the pot. Check the container for cracks and confirm that its size supports the tree’s current root system. Keep tools and substrate ready to shorten time out of the pot.

Position and secure

Place the tree at the intended height and angle, checking the front and root flare. Secure it firmly enough that wind or handling will not move roots, but do not constrict the trunk. Work substrate through the root mass with a chopstick or similar tool to remove large air pockets without crushing fine roots.

Water and aftercare

Water thoroughly until runoff is clear and the root ball is wetted evenly. Place the tree in conditions that reduce unnecessary stress while maintaining species-appropriate light and temperature. Avoid a rigid “shade for two weeks” rule: aftercare depends on how much root work was done, the species and the weather.

Check the result

The tree should not wobble, drainage should remain open, and roots should not be exposed unintentionally. Record the date and interventions. Delay major pruning if the planting involved significant root reduction.
