Protect containers before severe cold

Roots in shallow pots experience colder and faster-changing temperatures than roots in the ground. Use protection suited to species and local minimums, such as a cold frame, sheltered unheated space or insulating the pot. Do not move temperate trees into a warm living room to avoid frost; they need dormancy.

Keep monitoring moisture

Dormant trees still need occasional water when the root ball dries. Check sheltered benches and rain shadows, where pots may remain dry despite wet weather. Avoid leaving containers waterlogged in cold conditions.

Finish only appropriate light tasks

Remove fallen leaves from dense conifers and inspect for pests, but do not strip healthy foliage to create a tidy appearance. Check labels, trays, ties and wind stability. If wire is biting, remove it carefully; if the tree is not ready for heavy styling, wait.

Keep a record

Photograph branch structure after leaf fall, note damage and list spring priorities. This turns the quiet season into a planning window and reduces rushed work when buds begin to swell.
