Plan the bend
Identify the branch’s direction, thickness, flexibility and likely stress points. Apply a protective wrap where appropriate and use a wire diameter that holds without overpowering the branch. Anchor securely to the trunk or another stable point without constricting the tree.
Apply with control
Wrap at an even angle and avoid crossing turns that can pinch bark. Support the branch with one hand near the bend and move gradually. If the branch resists, stop; a larger bend may need staged wiring, a guy wire or a different design.
Inspect more often during growth
Wire does not stay safe for a fixed number of months. As a branch thickens, the wire can bite quickly, particularly on fast-growing species. Check regularly and remove or cut the wire before it marks the bark. Unwind only if doing so will not damage the branch; cutting is often safer.
Use wire for a purpose
Wiring is one tool among pruning, clip-and-grow and guying. Avoid wiring every branch by default. Keep a record of placement and check the tree after watering and weather changes.
