A Mediterranean evergreen

Arbutus unedo is native around the Mediterranean and parts of western Europe. It is adapted to bright outdoor conditions and mild climates, though hardiness varies with provenance and exposure. A small pot is more vulnerable to cold than a tree in the ground.

Value the natural features

The peeling bark, evergreen leaves, flowers and fruit can create interest across seasons. Avoid forcing a single standard style; let trunk movement and branching guide the composition. Leaves may remain relatively large, so choose a scale that supports their proportion.

Care with roots and water

Use a draining substrate and avoid prolonged waterlogging. Water thoroughly when the root ball needs it, with particular attention during warm windy weather. Repot conservatively and at a time that allows recovery; do not bare-root or heavily prune roots because a generic profile says so.

Slow, staged refinement

Arbutus may not produce rapid trunk thickening in a small container. Allow extension growth when development is the goal and cut back only where useful branches or buds exist. Protect from severe frost and sudden indoor-outdoor changes. Kew provides a taxonomic reference; local growers can advise on climate response.
