Confirm the cypress

Cupressus sempervirens is accepted by Kew and is associated with the Mediterranean region. Common names can be applied loosely to other Cupressus and related conifers. Confirm identity and cultivar because hardiness and response can vary.

Design from live growth

Cypress foliage does not reliably regenerate from old bare wood. Keep green growth where the branch must remain alive and avoid cutting back beyond viable foliage. Its upright habit can suggest formal or informal vertical designs, but movement should come from material that can safely be bent.

Sun, water and cold

Provide bright outdoor conditions and a free-draining root environment. Water thoroughly when needed, particularly during warm windy weather, without keeping roots saturated. In colder climates, protect the container from severe freezes while preserving outdoor seasonal conditions. A heated indoor room is not a winter solution.

Wire cautiously

Thin branches can be fragile, and wire can mark the bark. Use staged bends, inspect regularly and remove wire before it bites. Do not apply a fixed multi-year wiring duration.
