Know the material
Juniperus chinensis includes numerous cultivars sold as bonsai, and nursery labels may be broad. Scale-like and needle-like foliage can appear on different growth or stress conditions. Photograph healthy growth and retain the cultivar label; do not diagnose species from one branch alone.
Conifer rule: retain live foliage
Junipers generally need foliage on a branch to sustain it, and old bare sections may not bud. Before removing a shoot, trace its live connection and understand the design consequence. Heavy all-at-once pruning can weaken a tree and expose dead sections to further decline.
Wire and deadwood carefully
Juniper branches can be wired but need support and frequent checks. Protect bark and avoid forcing a bend beyond the branch’s capacity. Deadwood features should follow the live vein and the tree’s natural structure; carving is irreversible and requires sound horticultural judgment.
Outdoor light and airflow
Grow in bright outdoor conditions suited to the cultivar and local climate. Protect from extremes while maintaining airflow. Water thoroughly when needed, then allow drainage; a misted canopy is not a substitute for root watering. Disease and pest issues call for identification rather than automatic spraying.
